LA SAL, Utah (ABC4) — The Deer Creek Fire burning in San Juan County, which is now believed to be human caused, is current at 17,184 acres, according to the latest information from the Utah Department of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

Containment on the fire remains at 54%. About 580 fire personnel are fighting the fire with seven helicopters, 30 engines and 15 crews stationed in the area.

Officials say favorable weather conditions are expected again on Tuesday and should allow crews to continue building up containment. “Due to moderating fire behavior, crews were able to work directly along the fire edge, increase containment, and further secure the fire’s perimeter to the east and southeast,” officials said in a statement.

Due to a decrease in fire activity, officials have opened up entry on the west side of the fire and some of the lower Two-Mile area near Manti-La Sal National Forest.

Containing the fire perimeter

Crews say they have transformed the existing vegetation breaks into natural areas by filling them with soil and overlaying the area with brush and other forest debris.

On steep slopes, waterbars may be constructed to direct water away from firelines in an effort to prevent erosion on sloping roads and cleared paths.

The Hagerman Fire Protection District of Idaho is one of the crews on scene helping out with the Deer Creek fire. They posted the video below where you can see firefighters working on mop up and fallen trees that have been charred due to the fire.

With the increase in containment, some of the firefighters involved will be released to support other fires or will be able to travel home for rest before responding to other fires, officials said in the press release.

Current evacuation orders continue to remain in place for Zones 2, 3, 4 and 6. Mountain Shadows, Lower Highway 46 and Hang Dog will have access to roads and will be allowed to stay.

As of Monday, July 21, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and Utah Fire Authority have identified a suspect who may have caused the fire but are not releasing any additional information about the suspect at this time.
