Chicago’s Union Station, dedicated as “America’s Finest Railroad Terminal” on July 23, 1925, will celebrate its centennial birthday on Wednesday. A day before the milestone, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, along with other national and state officials, gathered to celebrate, touting the transit hub’s significance to the Midwest and the nation as a whole.
“More than just a symbol of the power and the spirit of Chicago, Union Station is the center of the most important rail hub in America for Amtrak, freight, and commercial rail,” Pritzker said. “[Tuesday’s] Centennial Celebration is a testament to what this place has meant to our nation and our people.”
In recent years, Union Station has undergone nearly $70 million worth of renovation and upgrades.
Union Station is the third busiest rail terminal in the United States.
