Bay Area-based Japanese grocery chain expanding with new Foster City location

(KRON) — A locally founded Japanese supermarket is expanding with another Bay Area location. Osaka Marketplace is opening in Foster City this November, according to a news release by Foster City.

Osaka Marketplace is located at the Edgewater Place Shopping Center, taking over the former space of Lucky’s grocery store, the city said. The supermarket joins a shopping plaza with other Asian eateries: Ritha Indian Restaurant, Chinese restaurant Rickshaw Corner, Korean barbecue restaurant Warehouse Buffet and Quickly.

Osaka Marketplace offers “a wide selection of Japanese groceries, fresh produce, seafood, ready-to-eat meals, and hard-to-find imported goods all under one roof,” Foster City officials wrote in a press release published on July 10.

Only the Fremont Osaka Marketplace is currently open. An Osaka Marketplace is also set to open in Pleasant Hill, across the street from Century Theaters. That location is “coming soon,” according to downtown Pleasant Hill’s website.

Osaka Marketplace features both a food court and a cafe inside the grocery store. The food court serves Japanese dishes such as ramen, chicken karaage and bento boxes.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Osaka Marketplace to Foster City,” Mayor Stacy Jimenez said in a press release. “Their arrival brings new energy to Edgewater Place Shopping Center and offers a fresh, high-quality shopping experience that our residents will truly enjoy.”

Osaka Marketplace opened its first location in Fremont back in November of 2021. According to the company, it was the first Japanese supermarket in the East Bay.

Asian grocery store openings have been the recent craze in the Bay Area.

In addition to the recently opened Jagalchi in Daly City, these Asian supermarkets will open: T&T Supermarket in San Francisco and San Jose, Seafood City in Daly City, Mega Mart in East Palo Alto, H Mart in Dublin and Tokyo Central in Emeryville.
