Oregon company recalls tuna salad products in multiple states. Here’s why

(NEXSTAR) – Albertsons is recalling a number of products in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma over concern that they may be contaminated with listeria.

All of the items contain tuna salad, prepared by Oregon-based Reser’s Fine Foods with breadcrumbs that may contain listeria monocytogenes, according to a Tuesday announcement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

While listeria may have short term side effects in healthy people, it can be potentially deadly among young children, older people and those with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Listeria cases among pregnant women have also been linked to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and serious infections of the newborn.

Among healthy individuals, symptoms can include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Ten products are being recalled in Albertsons, Randalls and Tom Thumb stores:

Reser’s-made tuna salad products are also being recalled at Albertsons’ Jewel Osco stores in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, according to a Thursday announcement.

As of Tuesday, the FDA said there have been no reported illnesses, but anyone who bought one of the recalled items should not eat it. The products can instead be returned to a local store for a full refund, the recall states.

People who did buy one of the items are urged “to use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.”
