The Alabama Public Service Commission says these changes include the implementation of the new 483 area code and the mandatory 10-digit dialing.
The new 483 area code will go into effect on February 23, 2026. By the third quarter of 2026, the familiar 334 area code will be exhausted.
New customers or customers needing an additional phone line may be assigned the new area code, according to the APSC. However, current customers with the 334 area code will not be affected by the new implementations.
Starting on January 23, 2026, anyone making calls within the 334 and 483 area code region will be required to use 10-digit numbers.
Customers can still make calls to three-digit numbers, such as 911.
