Sunil was arrested by Dublin Police Department officers following the July 17 shooting on an unrelated matter and found him in possession of a firearm, the San Leandro Police Department said. According to authorities, detectives linked him to Way’s death through descriptions of the suspect and the suspect vehicle.
Police said Sunil pulled up in his car next to Way and her boyfriend around 11 p.m. on East 14th Street near Williams Street. After a brief conversation, Sunil allegedly drew a handgun and shot Way once in the torso. After the shooting, detectives said Sunil fled in his car.
The woman’s boyfriend and her two dogs were uninjured in the shooting.
In addition to the murder charge, DA Dickson announced charges of assault with a semi-automatic gun and carrying a loaded weapon in public against Sunil. The charges include sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a firearm, causing death.
Police have not released any motives in the killing.
Sunil was scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.
