FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man is in critical condition after being shot and his car stolen in Fresno Monday morning, the Fresno Police Department announced.

Just after 11 a.m., police received 911 calls regarding a man in his 50s who had been shot and was lying in the roadway of the 200 block of North Fulton Street.

Officers located the man who was suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper body and immediately transported him to a local hospital, where he remains in critical, but stable condition.

Investigators report the victim parked along the curb of southbound Fulton Street when a man on a bicycle pulled up and had an argument with the victim. Shortly after, a gunshot was heard and the victim fell out onto the road. The suspect then got into the vehicle and fled southbound on Fulton Street

Almost an hour later, surveying officers found the vehicle parked on Tillman and Cesar Chavez, as a man was seen walking toward it. Once the man drove away, officers say they attempted to stop it, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed and eventually lost authorities.

Police eventually found the vehicle disabled, parked, and unoccupied near Kearney and Fresno streets. In the area, officers found the man they saw flee from Cesar Chavez and took him into custody.

Investigators report the suspect they have in custody will be booked, at least, on a charge of driving a stolen vehicle. Detectives are actively working to determine if this suspect was the original man who shot the victim and stole his car.
