Automatic ironing device could be a profitable new category

There’s an automated garment care system just now hitting the Kickstarter circuit that could potentially offer appliance dealers an added opportunity for revenue and margins. 

Einsen is described by its Australia-based startup as “the world’s first automated ironing device that delivers wrinkle-free, professionally-pressed clothes” in under 60 seconds. After garments are fed into its chamber, the unit reportedly employs advanced steam technology and spring-mounted, intelligent pressure control to steam, press and remove wrinkles automatically, saving households and busy professionals time and manual effort.  

Unlike upright, closet-sized steamers like the LG Styler and Samsung AirDresser, the comparably-priced Einsen has a compact, tabletop form factor and is designed to remove rather than relax wrinkles. It is presently being sold direct via Kickstarter (effective July 1), and carries a suggested retail price of $1,999. 

The unit can reportedly handle a wide range of garments thanks to a patent-pending 3D ironing system that uses internal plates that adapt to the unique geometry of each clothing item. This transforms the natural 3D shape of garments into a pressable format, allowing Einsen to treat every surface simultaneously, its designers said. 

Hot Under the Collar 

In addition, the product produces dry, superheated steam that reaches up to 392°F to penetrate multiple layers and release even the most stubborn wrinkles without leaving garments damp. It also has a sanitizing hygiene mode that eliminates bacteria, viruses and allergens from clothing. 

 Einsen also employs an onboard chipset that determines garment type, size and fabric to set the appropriate pressure, feed speed and temperature and duration of the steam to deliver optimal results. Compatible fabrics include cotton, linen, wool, denim, polyester and rayon (silk requires a protective barrier) and Einsen can accommodate sizes from XXS to XXL. 

The product has an estimated lifespan of seven years and carries a two-year limited manufacturer’s warranty. 

The engineering team behind Einsen was led by company founder/CEO Joss Charpenay, who brought more than 10 years’ experience in global partnerships and strategy roles to the project.
