27-year-old Cait Schott is a single mother, described by her family as strong, spirited and full of love for her young son.
Her family said she was watching TV with her son at Shellbrook Pointe Apartments in Fairhope Saturday evening when a man allegedly kicked in the front door and shot her several times.
“They started first aid and life saving measures until the med unit got there,” Lt. Shane Nolte with the Fairhope Police Department said.
The victim’s mother, Allyson Marshall, said her daughter’s son was in the apartment and saw everything.
Marshall said the six-year-old boy “begged the shooter for his mother’s life as she was pushing him under the bed shielding him from the gunfire.”
“I can’t imagine what he’s going to be dealing with emotionally,” she added. “He’s suffered a trauma no child should ever see or experience.”
Police identified the man who broke in and opened fire as 60-year-old Brian Medley.
“During that initial contact with the victim and trying to help her, she was able to tell them who the offender was in this situation,” Nolte said.
Officers immediately began their search for Medley.
“The minute they get the name; they’re putting it out to the rest of the guys on the street. Dispatch is getting BOLOS out to the surrounding areas with his information, the vehicle information, tag number, things like that,” Nolte said.
Police said Medley was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound early Sunday morning.
Schott’s mother said Medley and her daughter were coworkers. Close family friends told News 5 that Medley had tried to pursue a romantic relationship with Schott for months.
Investigators with the Fairhope Police Department are still working to piece together what led up to the shooting, but they said they’re not giving up anytime soon.
“We do still owe it to our victim to be able to put all the pieces together of what happened,” Nolte said.
Schott was flown to a hospital in Mobile on Saturday night where her mother said she’s had multiple surgeries for gunshot wounds to her liver and arm. As of Monday afternoon, she is in recovery from the surgeries, but her family said she has more surgeries to come in the near future.
“Please say an extra prayer for Cait,” Marshall said. “She has a very long road to recovery.”
Cait’s friends and family have set up a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of her medical care and long-term recovery. In just five hours since the page was posted, the GoFundMe has already raised more than $6,000 to help ease the financial burden of her medical expenses.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the title as Brian Medley is from Daphne, not Fairhope. We regret the error.

INCIDENT LOCATION:
According to Allyson Marshall, the victim’s mother, the woman shot was 27-year-old Cait Schott.
Allyson said Cait and her son, 6-year-old Ollie, were in bed in their apartment watching TV together when 60-year-old Brian Medley reportedly kicked in the door and opened fire on Cait, hitting her five times.
Ollie was unhurt, but Cait was shot three times in the chest, suffered a gunshot to the arm that shattered her humerus bone, and took another bullet to the back, which passed through the middle of her liver, according to her mother.
“Currently, all of the bullets are still in her body,” she said.
“By God’s grace, her heart and lungs were missed,” Allyson said.
Cait was life-flighted to USA Trauma Center in Mobile, where she has already had two surgeries to repair the damage to her liver. As of this morning, she was in surgery to repair her arm, her mother said.
“She has several more surgeries in her near future,” Allyson said, noting that doctors were working through one issue at a time, in order of severity. “Cait is tough, and her will to survive for her son is very strong. She will pull through this.”
The accused shooter, Brian Medley, was found dead shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
According to Allyson, Ollie was in the room when his mother was shot, and “begged the shooter for his mother’s life” as she tried to push him under the bed to keep him from getting hit.
“He’s suffered a trauma no child should ever experience,” Allyson said.
Allyson said Cait is a single mom who was working three jobs to support herself and her son.
“Medical and daily living expenses continue to accumulate and will continue for an unknown period of healing time,” she said. “She is expected to need around the clock care for four to five months.”
For that reason, Cait’s friends and family have started a GoFundMe.
Allyson urged those who can to reach out and help the family “by sharing your kindness and humanity for this sweet family in any form of donation” so that Cait can focus on her recovery and her rehabilitation.
“No matter how small, every donation makes an incredible difference and will be received with great appreciation,” she said.
