Just before midnight on Dec. 23, 2024, Doug Harless, 63, was allegedly shot and killed by London police after attempting to serve a search warrant. As details began to emerge, community members began questioning if officers had the right address.
Earlier that day, officers arrested 49-year-old Hobert Buttery in connection with a weed eater that’d been stolen from Laurel County Judge-Executive David Westerfield’s Taylor Drive home. Authorities said that Buttery admitted to stealing the items and told them the weed eater was at a home on Vanzant Road.
According to the Kentucky State Police, London police officers were serving a search warrant on Vanzant Road. Dispatch audio lists 489 Vanzant Road as the target for the warrant. However, officers reportedly responded to 511 Vanzant Road.
Moments later, Harless was shot and killed.
Court documents obtained by FOX 56 on Monday, July 21, show that Buttery has accepted a plea deal, and the case will no longer go to trial.
Buttery was originally charged with theft by unlawful taking of $1,000 < $10,000 and first-degree persistent felony offender. The persistent felony offender charge has been amended down to second degree as a condition of the plea agreement.
He faces 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, per court documents. Buttery will officially be sentenced at 9 a.m. on Aug. 13.
