The chase began around 2:30 p.m. with deputies in pursuit of a driver “who had previously eluded law enforcement in Washington,” Sheriff Brian Pixley said in a release.
The driver fled from deputies, but crashed down an embankment in the Deer Island area and died at the scene.
No one from law enforcement was hurt in the incident, the sheriff said. He told KOIN 6 News “a firearm was discharged on scene” but details surrounding the shooting are not clear at this time.
Canaan Road from Deer Island Heights Road to Merrill Creek Road is closed while the investigation is underway, officials said.
The Oregon State Police Major Crimes Team is now the lead agency on the investigation.
KOIN 6 News will have more information as it develops.
