Historical society explores Trail of Tears in Hempstead County

HEMPSTEAD COUNTY, Arkansas (KTAL/KMSS) — The Hempstead County Historical Society is teaching about significant history that is often overlooked.

Thousands of people of the Choctaw Nation came through the area when they were forced to leave their homes in Mississippi and travel to modern-day Oklahoma.

Tribal and military records estimate that roughly 100,000 people were forced from their homes in the American Southeast, with approximately 15,000 dying along the journey. The phrase “Trail of Tears” is intended to signify the suffering that those people experienced during the forced exodus to “Indian Territory.”

Chris Adams, Historian at Historic Washington State Park, will talk about how the “Trail of Tears” passed through and impacted Hempstead County from 1831 to 1833.

The Hempstead County Historical Society will meet on July 22, 2025, at the Annex Room of Tailgaters Burger Company in Hope, Arkansas, at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and learn about this pivotal time in history.
