WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A man was charged after a woman lost her unborn child due to a crash in Winston-Salem last month, according to a Winston-Salem Police Department news release.

On June 16, Winston-Salem officers responded to and investigated a crash in the 2400 block of North Patterson Avenue.

A 2021 Toyota Camry being driven by 30-year-old Dequante Johnson was going north on North Patterson Avenue when it failed to maintain lane control and hit a 2012 Dodge Ram truck, which was legally parked and unoccupied.

The impact pushed the Dodge into a 1999 Ford truck, which was also parked and unoccupied.

A pregnant woman was hurt in the crash and taken to a hospital. Due to the injuries from the crash, her unborn baby did not survive.

Speed and reckless driving were determined to be contributing factors in the crash

Johnson was charged with:

  • Involuntary Manslaughter of an Unborn Child
  • Speeding
  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving While License Revoked
  • Failure to Maintain Lane Control

On Wednesday, Johnson was arrested and charged. He was given a $150,000 secured bond.

He was also served with an outstanding parole violation related to the case and is currently being held without bond on that violation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
