The female groundhog was named Maple. Zoo officials say she is still settling in, but the Ambassador Animal Team will bring her out for encounters soon.
The female groundhog arrived at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo following a seizure by the Oregon State Police and the Oregon Humane Society – the seizures come after the Oregon State Police and partner agencies served multiple search warrants at the West Coast Game Park Safari, a now-closed roadside attraction in Bandon, Oregon, on May 15.
The warrant resulted in a total of 310 animals being rescued and relocated to accredited or permitted animal sanctuaries or rescue facilities – among those animals was Maple.
Officials say Maple is an example of the role that AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, like the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, play. They add that wildlife seizures are not uncommon.
Zoo officials ask anyone who wishes to support them to continue working with partners and provide “invaluable resources and expertise” in times of need, to donate here.
