Utah’s economy sees increase in jobs despite steady unemployment rate

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4) — Despite remaining stationary in June, Utah’s unemployment rate continues to be lower than the national average, according to the Utah Department of Workforce Services.

The latest report shows that Utah’s unemployment rate remained steady at 3.2 percent for June. That number remains the same from May but remains below the national rate, which fell to 4.1 percent.

The report also states the state’s economy has added just under 40,000 jobs since June 2024, which is an increase of 2.3 percent. Private sector employment also had a year-over-year increase of two percent, or nearly 30,000 jobs. Industries such as education, health services and construction saw the largest gains in employment.

“Continued job gains and a low unemployment rate show our economy is on solid footing,” said Ben Crabb, chief economist with the Department of Workforce Services. “The broad expansion across industries reflects the resilience of the state’s economy even as metrics of labor market tightness such as the number of openings per unemployed worker trend downward.”

The July employment report will be released on August 15.
