According to the Kinston Police Department, officers were called to a domestic-related incident around 3 a.m. Sunday on the 1300 block of Manchester Road. They were told that a man had a firearm and threatened to shoot a woman who was also home.
Officers said the man answered the door upon their arrival, and during a brief encounter he produced a firearm. “In response to the immediate threat, officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect,” a spokesperson from Kinston police said in a social media release. “Officers rendered aid at the scene; however, the suspect was pronounced deceased on-site.”
The spokesperson said that while the department investigates the incident, both officers are placed on administrative leave. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is also conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
As of Sunday morning, the identity of the shooting victim has not been released by the Kinston Police Department.
