MOREHEAD, Ky. (FOX 56) — An eastern Kentucky teen has been killed, and another victim was flown to Lexington for treatment after an early morning shooting in Morehead.

Around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 20, the Morehead Police Department (MPD) announced in a news release that officers responded to reports of a shooting in the area of West Sun Street in Morehead. When they arrived, two juveniles had been shot.

The Rowan County Coroner’s Office posted on social media that the first victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was 15 years old.

The second victim was reportedly taken to UK–St. Claire Regional Medical Center, then transferred to UK Hospital in Lexington for further treatment.

After a short search, officers arrested Gildardo Martinez, 36. According to a news release on Sunday, he was charged with:

  • Murder
  • First-degree assault
  • Attempted rape

Jail records with the Rowan County Detention Center, where he was lodged, indicated he was also charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, first and second offenses, second-degree fleeing or evading police on foot, resisting arrest, and second-degree disorderly conduct.

Both the MPD and the Rowan County Coroner’s office stated that the shooting investigation remains ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
