Gunnison community mourns loss of 10-year-old boy killed while riding bike

GUNNISON, Utah (ABC4) — People in Gunnison are mourning the loss of a 10-year-old boy who was struck and killed while riding his bicycle this week. A bake sale was held on Saturday to help raise money for the family.

Xander was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding his bike in Gunnison on Wednesday, July 16. The incident occurred at around 4:20 p.m. at the intersection of 100 South and Main Street. Xander was reportedly hit while crossing the street at 100 South — his older brother and a friend behind him.

The family held a bake sale on Saturday to honor him and help ease the financial burden. ABC4.com spoke with friends and relatives.

“He’s a good kid. We all loved him. He was everyone’s little, little buddy. And our family’s taken it kind of rough,” Xander’s brother, Hunter, said.

Those close to him have memorialized a bench at the street corner where Xander was struck. Community members brought items of his favorite color, blue, to remember him there.

“To know him was to love him. He was friendly to everyone. Just such a bright and loving kid,” one friend, Ginny Burgess, said.

The bake sale raised over $4,700, ABC4.com learned Saturday night. The GoFundMe has raised over $22,000.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
