CHICAGO — A woman is dead and a man is recovering in the hospital after they were shot in what police believe was an early morning drive-by on the city’s South Side.

Chicago police say they were first called to the scene just before 1 a.m. Saturday, following a report of a person shot in the area.

When officers arrived, they found the victims, a 37-year-old and a male, whose age is unknown.

According to police, a preliminary investigation indicates that the victims were struck by gunfire when an unknown individual opened fire from a vehicle nearby before fleeing the scene.

The woman injured in the shooting was later pronounced dead on the scene, while the other victim was taken to the hospital in fair condition.

It is unclear what led to the shooting and no arrests have been made.

Authorities have not yet identified the victim killed and an investigation is underway.
