PICTURES: Tree struck by lightning at Zion National Park

KOLOB, Utah (ABC4) — Crews responded to a tree that was struck by lightning in Kolob Canyon at Zion National Park on Thursday, June 17, according to Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue.

Officials said the call came in from a local resident. Due to that call, crews were able to access the area, cut the tree down, and fully extinguish the fire before it had a chance to spread.

Fire officials said the tree had enough fuel to burn for 1,000 hours, which is roughly over a month. That could have posed a serious risk, such as a wildfire, if left unchecked, officials said. The tree also had potential for long-term smoldering.

This comes after the Forsyth Fire burning near Pine Valley in Washington County was caused due to a tree that was struck with lightning. Crews said that tree burned for nine days before starting the Forsyth Fire.
