Pennsylvania congressman demands special prosecutor, release of Epstein files

(WHTM) — A Pennsylvania congressman joined the growing number of Republicans demanding more transparency from the Trump administration over its handling of files related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) released a letter he sent to Attorney General Pamela Bondi demanding she appoint a special prosecutor to look into the case as well as release sealed grand jury records from a 2006 Florida investigation into Epstein.

“I write with serious concern regarding federal government weaponization of federal agencies, as well as the persistent lack of transparency and accountability in the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case,” Perry said in the letter, which he released the same day the Department of Justice requested a judge to unseal grand jury testimony from the prosecution of the disgraced financier in Manhattan.

Perry called the case “one of the most troubling examples of apparent failures within our justice system,” citing a 2008 non-prosecution agreement with Epstein and federal prosecutors in which he served 13 months in a work-release program after he pleaded guilty to charges of prostitution that included ones involving a minor.

The congressman added that Bondi’s handling of the case has only compounded distrust.

“Your office’s February 2025 release of Epstein-related documents, while a step toward transparency, contained little new information and failed to address the persistent demand for a full accounting of Epstein’s network, including any unprosecuted co-conspirators,” Perry said.

The issue has split Republicans after Bondi’s office and the FBI said in a memo earlier this month that they would not release any more information about the Epstein case, despite previously teasing the existence of a “client list.”

President Donald Trump bashed “foolish Republicans” for getting “duped” on Epstein.

“I call it the Epstein hoax. Takes a lot of time and effort. Instead of talking about the great achievements we’ve had … they’re wasting their time with a guy who obviously had some very serious problems, who died three, four years ago. I’d rather talk about the success we have with the economy,” Trump said.

However, after facing pressure from much of his base, the president directed Bondi on Thursday to release relevant grand jury transcripts in the case.
