The coroner’s office identified the man as 35-year-old Matthias Aguilar of Merced.
Shortly before 8 a.m., deputies say Aguilar was found unresponsive after being pulled out of the water of Courtright Reservoir. Deputies say they later learned Aguilar was fishing in a kayak near Marmot Rock Campground when he lost his balance and fell into the water.
The sheriff’s office adds he was wearing heavy clothing and boots, but no life jacket. Despite Aguilar’s attempts to swim to the shore, he still went underwater. It took him two minutes to resurface.
Friends swam out to him and took him to the shore. They attempted CPR efforts while deputies and medics responded; however, by the time deputies arrived at the scene, Aguilar had passed away.
