Ari Aster drops us back into the Summer of 2020. Joaquin Phoenix plays a sheriff who plans to become mayor of the small town of Eddington to “bring things back to the way things were”. A horrifying look into a time most want to forget, and a stark reminder of how divided our communities were and are today.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (R)

The slicker is back, and they brought their hook. This legacy sequel drags a new group of pretty elitist teens back into a new but familiar nightmare, while the OG crew shows up but with not a lot to do. The suspense worked at times, but the story feels overplayed and evokes the horror films of the 2000s. Whether that’s for you or not, It may be better to just watch the original and forget the crime that was this movie.

Smurfs (PG)

Rihanna is Smurfette, and somehow, that’s not the focus of this movie. This new animated musical loads up on lore and expands the Smurfs mythos, but forgets to smuggle in anything resembling heart. It’s a sugary kid flick made in a lab to stream once and forget forever. If you’re under seven, it might be a banger. If not, keep Smurfing.

K-Pop Demon Hunter (PG)

What if your favorite K-Pop group was secretly saving the world between world tours? This animated Netflix and Sony animated film brings a fresh and fun story loaded with great music, fun action scenes, and surprising depth to their characters. The story’s simple, but the vibes are s-teir. It’s action-packed, funny, and made to be rewatched with subtitles off and the volume all the way up.
