All kids on all 44 teams, ages ranging from 6-11, received a game used Banana Ball in addition to meeting a few of the players, getting autographs and pictures as well.
For Bananas pitcher Zack Phillips, it was a homecoming. A graduate of Texas High, he had the opportunity to give back to the community where his love of baseball began.
Phillips shared that often he would get in trouble for dancing on the field while playing ball. Fast forward to today, and that is how he makes a living.
With the intensity of youth sports increasing, his message to kids and parents is simple: have fun.
“Coming from where I come from playing baseball since I was 3 years old, there’s a lot of kids that grow up, their dads, their moms, ‘hey, you gotta do this, you gotta do that or you’re not gonna make it’. You know what? Go out and have fun,” Phillips said. “You might have struck out 3 times. You might have made a 3 errors, but if you’re having fun, who cares what your parents say? Go out and have fun and I’m sorry parents in advance. I’m looking right at you right now, but at this age it’s for the kids to have fun. When they turn 16-17, okay, maybe harp on them, ‘hey, you’re not doing good enough to get drafted or go to college’, but right now this age, go out and have fun.”
Let those kids dance and maybe one day they, too, will be apart of the dancing baseball team taking the country by storm.
