Officers were called to the Dollar Tree on East Jefferson Street to speak with one of the store’s employees on July 10, around 4:20 p.m. The woman told authorities that the suspect bought deodorant before demanding the money in the register.
The victim said Keckler had his hand under his shirt, implying he had a gun, officials reported.
When the employee ran from behind the counter, Keckler ripped the whole register off the table and fled the scene, according to court records.
Video surveillance corroborated the victim’s story.
Police determined Keckler was the suspect and that he was on parole for committing armed robbery in 2017 during investigations.
Keckler was booked into the Winnebago County Jail on July 17.
He is charged with aggravated robbery while indicating possession of a firearm.
