Man convicted of murder for shooting man after trying to steal his car in Minneapolis

A jury on Wednesday convicted a man of murder charges after he and a co-conspirator used a dating app to lure the victim to Minneapolis, tried to steal his car, shot him and left him for dead.

Vernon Sirhyde Archie, 29, was convicted on two separate counts of second-degree murder for the May 17, 2024, death of Da’Vnte Jovan Adams.

Archie’s codefendant, Megan Renee Karjala, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree aggravated robbery back in April; she is scheduled to face sentencing on Aug. 12.

According to charging documents, Archie encouraged Karjala to meet with Adams after she matched with him on a dating app. The two planned to steal his car because they were “desperate for money,” Karjala told police.

When Adams drove up in a Chevrolet Suburban to meet with Karjala on the 2200 block of Fifth Avenue North, surveillance footage shows the defendants approach the car while wearing ski masks.

Karjala told police Adams ran away after she and Archie tried to get his keys from him. Archie chased Adams down, shooting him multiple times, according to the criminal complaint. Karjala then said she ran up and pulled out her own gun on Adams until he gave up the keys. The pair got in the Suburban and drove away.

Police found Adams lying on the ground and bleeding heavily from gunshots to his face, neck, chest and ribs. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Archie’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 11. He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
