At 1:35 a.m. on Thursday, officers received a report of a person shot at the Mucky Duck Pub in the 4400 block of Southport Crossings Way. When officers arrived, they located a man in the parking lot with a gunshot wound.
That victim died around half an hour later in the hospital, leaving some fellow customers stunned.
“It didn’t feel real,” said witness Elijah Daviau. “I saw the guy lying there and a bunch of people freaking out.”
Daviau, a patron at the bar, spoke with FOX59/CBS4 crews on scene on Thursday. While he didn’t see the gunfire, Daviau saw the aftermath of the shooting, including a fight that erupted outside.
Managers at the Mucky Duck claim the deadly shooting was caught on camera and shows the suspect getting in his car and starting to drive away in the parking lot. That video then shows the victim reach into the suspect’s passenger side window, leading to the shooting and a chaotic scene that followed.
Employees at the Mucky Duck insist the suspected shooter had been asked to leave the business, which he did, but he then walked around the building and was confronted by the victim.
After the shooting, several people crowded around the victim to give him CPR, trying to save his life.
That’s when emotions escalated again. When officers arrived on the scene, a fight was reportedly taking place in the parking lot between a small handful of distraught people.
“There was a fight and people beating each other up. Even when the cops pulled up, they were still beating each other up,” said Daviau. “There was just so much chaos going on.”
“Upon officers arriving, there was a large disturbance out in the parking lot,” confirmed IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer.
IMPD said overnight the chaotic scene initially made it hard to determine a motive for the killing. The suspected shooter left the scene but was later tracked down and detained for questioning throughout the day. IMPD later announced this person of interest was arrested under a preliminary charge of murder.
While the area around Southport Road, which is filled with hotels and restaurants, doesn’t usually see much violence, this is the second homicide in the same business park this year.
A fight at the Texas Roadhouse, directly across the street from the Mucky Duck, ended with a deadly shooting in February.
Witnesses to the latest killing just wish people would learn the emotional toll violence can leave behind and taking someone’s life is never the answer to solving a dispute.
“It’s hard for me to talk about. I have never seen anything like that in my life,” said Daviau. “I couldn’t imagine that being anyone in my family. It was horrible.”
IMPD reiterates that this remains an active and ongoing investigation. They ask any witnesses who were at the scene but left without talking to police to contact either IMPD’s homicide office or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
At this time, the person of interest whom police arrested has not been identified.
