HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — An exciting dedication in Hagerstown was made on Thursday.

The much-anticipated opening of a new Boys & Girls Club facility in Washington County marked an important milestone for a cherished community resource.

The Boys & Girls Clubs offer summer camps and empowerment programs with peer groups who serve as positive influences.

Community liaison Jordan Jones said the Boys & Girls Club is vital to the community.

“A place like this saves kids from being out in the community engaging in activities that could be detrimental,” Jordan Jones said.

Family advocate Marilyn Jones said there needs to be a place where children can go.

“A lot of time we see them on the street, and if we can direct them, this center offers everything for them,” Marilyn Jones said.

The new 21,000 square-foot facility replaces one that has been home to the clubs for 84 years. Community leaders said the nearly-$22 million investment will pay off many times over for the region.

When school is not in session, the facility will be a safe and engaging environment for kids.

Former Hagerstown Mayor Tekesha Martinez and Sen. Paul Corderman (R-Washington County) worked closely with former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to secure funding for the new facility.

Hogan made the trip to western Maryland for Thursday’s dedication.

“A place like this makes a huge difference in children’s lives,” Hogan said. “We love Hagerstown and everybody here today had so much to do with making the facility a reality. It’s been a great team effort.”

Statistics show that kids aligned with the Boys and Girls Clubs are more likely to finish high school, attend college and be less likely to be involved in crime.
