Flood Watch for southwest Utah through Thursday evening as monsoon moisture builds

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Thursday, Utah! We’re looking at partly cloudy skies and hazy conditions for our Thursday afternoon across northern Utah. Monsoon moisture looks to build across southern Utah for our Thursday afternoon, leading to the threat for some heavy rain in spots.

A Flood Watch is in effect for parts of SW Utah through midnight Friday, as heavy rain potential will linger in this portion of the state late this evening into tonight. Heavy downpours could lead to quickly rising waters for some of our normal dry washes, slot canyons, and low-lying urban areas. Have a way to receive weather alerts throughout the evening.

A boundary will begin to work its way south across Utah on Friday. This system may help to pull deeper moisture north across north and central Utah, leading to increasing rain chances for the northern half of state Friday afternoon. A Marginal risk for flash flooding may spread towards the I-80 corridor during the afternoon hours as heavy downpours focus closer along the frontal boundary.

We will keep a chance for a few isolated storms in the forecast for the beginning of the weekend, followed by drier air returning by late-weekend into next week. High temperatures will remain into the mid to upper 90s for the Wasatch Front, with highs climbing back above the triple digits for SW Utah.

It looks to remain mostly dry and warm through much of next week, as a high pressure ridge to our east keeps us pretty stable across the region.
