Alexis Otoniel Hernandez-Araujo, a Salvadoran national unlawfully present in the U.S., was taken into custody by FBI Indianapolis agents in coordination with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE/ERO).

According to court documents, Hernandez-Araujo was allegedly driving drunk at a high speed on July 6, 2024, in the 1200 block of Reisner Street when he crashed into another vehicle carrying a pregnant woman and two children. His 19-year-old brother, who was a passenger in his vehicle, was ejected and died at the scene.

A 5-year-old in the struck vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries, including a skull fracture and broken hip, while a 14-year-old and the pregnant driver were also seriously injured, authorities said.

Investigators reported Hernandez-Araujo’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit of 0.08 at the time of the crash. He was wanted on charges including reckless homicide and multiple related offenses.

“The FBI and ICE/ERO will continue to work closely with local, state, and federal partners to ensure violent offenders are held accountable and brought to justice,” the agencies said in a joint statement.

Further details about his court appearance or immigration proceedings were not immediately available.
