APPLE RIVER, Ill. (WTVO) — Seven people, all occupants of an all-terrain vehicle, were injured Thursday when the speeding driver unsuccessfully tried to negotiate a curve on a downhill trail in Apple River.

According to the Jo Daviess Sheriff’s Office, around 1:58 p.m. deputies were called to an ATV trail near the intersection of Flintock Lane and Powder Horne Lane in Apple Canyon Lake.

Police said the ATV overturned after it was piloted at an unsafe speed down the embankment.

Authorities said the ATV swerved and rolled over at least once before hitting a tree.

The driver refused medical treatment. Four of the occupants were taken to various local hospitals by emergency personnel after suffering injuries in the crash.

Authorities said the crash was still under investigation.
