Mica Layton presented with Heroes with Halos award

Mica Layton, LPN at Baxter Health Ahrens Family Clinic, was presented with the Heroes with Halos Award after performing life-saving CPR on a cardiac arrest victim during a youth baseball game in Harrison.
The incident occurred on May 29, when a 69-year-old man collapsed from cardiac arrest prior to the start of his grandson’s baseball game. Layton, who was off duty and attending the game as a parent, responded immediately.

A donor’s letter recounting the incident stated that Layton checked for a pulse, found none, and instructed others to move the man to the ground. She began CPR, taking turns with the victim’s son-in-law until emergency responders arrived. Layton also relayed the man’s medical history to EMTs at the scene.

The man, a patient at Ahrens Clinic, was later hospitalized for 11 days, underwent stent placement, and was fitted with an external defibrillator. He is expected to make a full recovery, with no signs of brain damage.

“Mica is our hero,” the donor wrote. “She gave my father life that he otherwise would not have had without her quick actions.”

Cindy Costa, Gift Officer for the Baxter Health Foundation says Layton’s quick action helped save a life, and there are many ways to receive a Heroes with Halos award.
