Miami hotels looking to hometowners to fill rooms

With summer in full swing, area hotels and spas are seeing a trend in staycations as locals are looking to take advantage of Miami’s tourism industry offerings.

Local, or staycation visitors are an essential part of Miami-Dade County’s tourism landscape, said Rolando Aedo, COO of Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“Historically we know that day trippers within a 30-mile radius of our destination make up a significant number of these travelers,” Mr. Aedo told Miami Today. “While local tourism is complemented by year-round with large-scale events, conferences and more, summer programs like Miami Spa Months, Miami Spice and summer deals allow residents to experience the best of our destination – from world-class dining and luxury spa treatments to vibrant arts and entertainment.”

Looking for easy summer escapes doesn’t require a boarding pass, added Joseph LaFleur, the general manager at Yotel Miami.

“YOTEL Miami typically accounts for about 40% of summer bookings from locals across both South Florida and the state as a whole. It’s definitely an important part of our revenue stream as we continue to set our footprint here in downtown Miami,” he said. “We see guests who want a weekend escape without the hassle of flying, or those that are hopping on a cruise at PortMiami or even going to a concert at Kaseya Center. Being centrally located and offering two types of products helps us stand out from the competition – YOTEL Miami offers traditional hotel rooms while YOTELPAD Miami gives guests the options to book apartment-style stays.”

This summer, Florida residents and AAA members can get perks at YOTEL Miami located at 227 NE Second St. The special rate includes complimentary parking, daily breakfast for two, $15 food and beverage credit, and a room upgrade based on availability.

“This year, we’re anticipating an even bigger uptick in local bookings. With the current slowdown in international travel, especially from some of our usual feeder markets, we’re already seeing more demand from South Florida residents looking to stay close to home but still treat themselves.”

Other notable hotel offerings include:

■ Fontainebleau Miami Beach at 4441 Collins Ave. is giving 30% off when local guests stay two nights or extend their getaway to three or more nights and save 40%. Plus, guests will receive a $50 resort credit. This offer is valid for booking through July 31.

■ Faena Miami Beach at 3201 Collins Ave. is offering perks for Florida and Georgia residents, available through October. This special offer includes a $100 daily American breakfast for two on the Veranda, a $200 resort credit, complimentary valet parking for one vehicle, 15% off spa treatments at Tierra Santa Healing House, a complimentary room upgrade at check-in, and late check-out.

The GMCVB is celebrating its 18^th edition of Miami Spa Months.
