Groundhog’s wild journey to Fresno started with a raid in Oregon

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s newest groundhog had a journey across state lines to get to Fresno, a journey that involved a four-day search warrant and the seizure of over 300 animals in Oregon.

According to the Oregon Humane Society, the groundhog which is now in the Chaffee Zoo’s care, was rescued following an investigation into West Coast Game Park Safari, a now-closed roadside attraction in Bandon, Oregon.

On May 15, 2025, Oregon State Police and partner agencies, including the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, served multiple search warrants at the site. Officials say the search warrants were the result of a lengthy criminal investigation into the facility’s operations.

The warrant prompted an outpouring of help for the animals housed there, including the groundhog who now lives in Fresno. Veterinarians and staff with the Oregon Humane Society, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Oregon Department of Agriculture worked to bring the animals back to health.

Unfortunately, a camel was euthanized on the first day of the search after being diagnosed with multiple serious medical conditions. A chicken and a kinkajou were also later euthanized.

A total of 310 animals were rescued and relocated to accredited or permitted animal sanctuaries or rescue facilities. Among them was Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s newest groundhog. Since receiving the groundhog, the public has been asked to help name the new groundhog.

The Oregon Humane Society says they are “so grateful to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo for their assistance,” adding that a case of this magnitude has required cooperation and assistance from dozens of agencies.

The investigation into the West Coast Game Park Safari in Bandon, Oregon, is ongoing. According to the Oregon State Police, investigators continue to process evidence collected at the site.
