Former PPD Officer Mark Dial sentenced to immediate parole

(WPHL) — Former Philadelphia Police officer Mark Dial has been sentenced to immediate parole after time served, after he killed Eddie Irizarry in 2023.
Editor’s note: The video above is from a prior report.

According to breaking news reports, Dial has served 10 months in police custody. He was facing a minimum of four-and-a-half years in prison.

On August 14, 2023, Dial and his partner conducted a traffic stop on the 100 block of E. Willard Street, where Irizarry was driving the wrong way on the one-way road. Body camera video shows the officers are heard shouting, “Show me your hands,” ”He’s got a …. knife,” “Don’t move,” and “I’ll … shoot you.” The Inquirer reports that the jury found Dial acted “unreasonably and recklessly” when he shot Irizarry six times through his car window, while Irizarry was holding a knife with the windows up. Prosecutors said he was not an imminent threat to Dial.

During his trial in May 2025, it was a mixed verdict: Dial was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and related crimes but was acquitted of the third-degree murder charge.

Dial was initially charged with:

  • Murder Of The First Degree
  • Murder Of The Third Degree
  • Voluntary Manslaughter
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Possession of an Instrument Of Crime
  • Simple Assault
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person
  • Oppression

Irizarry would have been 30 years old in September.
