The alert is in effect from 2 p.m. through Thursday evening and includes counties such as Ashe, Watauga, Wilkes, Alleghany, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin.
Forecasters are warning of the potential for heavy rainfall and flash flooding, especially as thunderstorms develop during the hottest part of the day.
Some storms could bring 2 to 4 inches of rain in just one hour, which can quickly overwhelm local streams, rivers, and low-lying areas. The Flood Watch also extends to parts of southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia.
If you live in a flood-prone area, particularly near rivers, creeks, or other low-lying spots, Thursday is a good day to stay weather-aware. The National Weather Service advises:
Even if your area doesn’t see severe flooding, repeated downpours could lead to slick roads, rising water, and hazardous travel conditions.
