Prosecutors showed jurors the weapon allegedly used by Montanto in the deadly shooting of Lasso in March 2023. Further eyewitness testimony provided a more detailed account of the foot pursuit in Gage Park.
“The police officer told him many times to stop,” testified witness Edgar Gutierrez.

“And what did he do next?” Cook County prosecutors asked Gutierrez.
“He stopped, turned around, pulled out a gun and fired,” Gutierrez responded.
Gutierrez is one of multiple witnesses who say they heard Lasso calling for Montano during the foot chase to stop and drop his weapon. The 21-year-old Montano is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly firing five shots at Lasso. The slain officer returned fire, with a bullet hitting Montano in the jaw.
Officers quickly took the suspect into custody.
A domestic disturbance call sparked the incident, investigators say. Montano’s girlfriend, who took the stand Tuesday, called 911 dispatchers to say he was chasing her with a gun. Officer Lasso responded to the call near 52nd & Spaulding, which cost him his life.
Court proceedings continue on Thursday.
