Democrats walk out of Senate Judiciary Committee hearing

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Democrats walked out of a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting Thursday after the committee approved two controversial Trump nominees, Justice Department official Emil Bove and former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro to federal judgeships.

Democrats objected after debate was cut short. Democrats say Republicans improperly rushed the process.

A Democratic spokesperson for the committee says Republicans broke several rules. Democrats plan to take the issue to the Senate parliamentarian.

Bove has been accused by a whistleblower of saying the administration should consider telling the courts “f‑‑‑ you” and defy any injunctions imposed by judges blocking their use of the Alien Enemies Act.

“What is Donald Trump saying to you that are making you do something which is violating the decorum of this committee, the rules of this committee, the decency and the respect that we have each other to at least hear each other out?” asked Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) of Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa.).

Right before adjourning the meeting Grassley said, “If you’ll spread that word that this is not unprecedented, either the actions of the minority walking away or what we did here as the majority. It’s happened before. We have to move things along.”

Earlier this week, more than 75 former federal and state judges both conservative and liberal, urged the Judiciary Committee to reject Bove’s nomination.
