The Department of Justice said 32-year-old Dwight Hasberry and three others committed multiple carjackings in the overnight hours of Sept. 28 and 29, 2022.
One Sept. 28 carjacking happened in West Town and involved a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV with an infant in a car seat in the back of the SUV.
Hasberry and three other people – identified as Damandre Henley, Tyler Oates-Nelson and Davario McDowell – pointed guns at the driver and infant and ordered them out of the SUV. The driver was able to remove the infant from the car before the four suspects got in and drove off, according to investigators.
Authorities said the group drove to the city’s Ravenswood Manor neighborhood where Henley, McDowell and Hasberry robbed another victim of their cellphone, wallet and keys at gunpoint. They also robbed another victim of their backpack.
The group then proceeded to rob a nearby 7-Eleven. Once inside, Henley hit a store clerk in the head with his gun while forcing him to open the cash register, according to officials.
The crew left the 7-Eleven with cash, cigarettes and liquor bottles.
On July 10, 2025, a judge sentenced Hasberry to 15 years in federal prison, while the other three individuals involved were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 to 22 years earlier this year.
