Chicago police say 19-year-old Michael Jenkins, a North Lawndale resident, is facing a slew of felony charges, including one count of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and identity theft.
Officers say the charges stem from Jenkins’ alleged role in a string of armed robberies and car thefts that unfolded in Lakeview between June 9 and July 13.
Officers say the crime spree began on June 9 when Jenksin allegedly stole a car from the 3100 block of North Broadway. That same day, Jenkins allegedly robbed a 21-year-old woman at gunpoint in the 700 block of West Roscoe Street.
An initial report by police indicated that the robbery along Roscoe was conducted by two male offenders, though officers have not identified any other suspects in the case.
A little over a month later, on July 12, Jenkins allegedly stole another vehicle near the scene of the first car theft.
Officers said Jenkins returned to the neighborhood on Sunday night, where he allegedly robbed two 24-year-old women at gunpoint near the 400 block of West Wellington Avenue. During that robbery, officers said a struggle ensued with the victim and she was allegedly shot by Jenkins.
An initial report by police indicated that the robbery along Wellington was conducted by three male offenders in a silver SUV, though officers have not identified any other suspects in the case.
Authorities eventually caught up with Jenkins in Grand Crossing on Monday, where he was taken into custody.
Jenkins appeared in court on Wednesday for a detention hearing.
