Wilt was injured in the line of duty when he responded to an active shooter situation on April 10, 2023, at Old National Bank in
Wilt has come a long way, but he will continue to heal for the rest of his life, according to his family.
“Nick continues his recovery, although progress is slow, he is always dedicated to his continued therapy at UofL Health – Frazier Rehabilitation Institute and in-home brain games,” Louisville police said, sharing an update from his family.
Wilt’s family said he has been walking independently with the assistance of a cane since early 2024, but by September, he rarely needed the cane.
“He will still move carefully, as his left leg is weaker, but it’s a huge milestone for him to be walking at all,” the Louisville Metro Police Department said on Facebook.
The update included some of the continuing complications, including near-daily headaches, but said he is arguably funnier now than before his injury.

“Nick is doing more than ever imagined and still surprises the therapist and doctors nearly every session. We all continue to pray for health, happiness, safety, and continued healing. All of which have been continuously answered, and to this day, we still see miracles happen. Something we wish the world could see. Nick is strong-willed and, as we’ve said since day 1, He. Never. Backs. Down,” Nick’s brother Zack said on Facebook.
