Juveniles and gun found after accidental shooting in Greenwood, police say

GREENWOOD, Ind. — Multiple juveniles were found with a gun at a Greenwood home where an accidental shooting sent one child to a hospital.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called early Wednesday morning — at approximately 1:20 a.m. — to a home on Heritage Lane on report of a shooting.

Deputies reported finding one juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. The shooting was ruled accidental with two other juveniles present at the scene of the incident.

The injured juvenile was transported to a hospital, but his injury wasn’t life-threatening. The sheriff’s department said that by Thursday afternoon the juvenile had been released from the hospital and was at home recovering.

The sheriff’s department didn’t provide any further information on the accidental shooting. It is unclear if the juvenile accidentally shot himself or if another juvenile had been handling a firearm at the time the gun discharged.

An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. At this time, charges have not been filed in connection to the incident, but the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the investigation to determine if charges may be filed in the near future.
