Jurors view bodycam video of deadly CPD officer shooting in trial of accused killer

CHICAGO (WGN) — Opening statements continued Tuesday in the murder trial of Steven Montano, accused in the deadly 2023 shooting of Chicago police officer Andres Vasquez Lasso, with jurors viewing bodycam video of the fatal encounter.

Prosecutors first introduced the victim to the jury, revealing that Officer Andres Vasquez Lasso was a native of Colombia and a loyal and protective individual who was fiercely proud of his public service, according to his loved ones.

“His life was violently stolen,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin Nolan in opening statements. “The person responsible is the murderer standing 20 feet in front of you.”

Accused gunman Steven Montano sat expressionless at the defense table amid the first day of testimony at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse. The slain officer’s wife and mother were among grieving family members accompanied by a group of Chicago Police officers, including Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 President John Catanzara.

“The bodycam speaks for itself,” Catanzara said. “It’s as clear as day what happened.”

Lasso’s wife briefly took the stand to testify before the first of many police body camera videos played in court, making up a crucial part of the state’s case.

Prosecutors also called Steven Montano’s former girlfriend, Lina Perea, to the stand. Perea was 37 years old when she started dating the then 18-year-old Montano. On the stand, Perea described how Montano allegedly chased her out of their house on March 1, 2023, on the 5200 block of S. Spalding. Perea reportedly called 911 to report that her boyfriend was chasing her with a gun.

Prosecutors say the incident led to a CPD response and a foot pursuit. Officer Lasso gave chase, exchanging gunfire, according to investigators. Lasso suffered five gunshot wounds, including a fatal bullet to the head.

Officers quickly took Montano, who was shot in the jaw, into their custody.

Members of the Teamsters gathered outside the courthouse on Tuesday to show their support for Lasso’s family.

“We support public sector employees throughout the state of Illinois and all over the country,” said Anthony McGee, vice president of Teamsters Local 700.

Prosecutors also called witnesses to stand to testify that they saw Montano with a gun in his hand, in an attempt to evade police on March 1, the day of the deadly shooting.

Court proceedings resume on Wednesday.
