DALLAS (KDAF) — According to new data, Texas isn’t exactly the safest place to purchase property and settle down.

Research by Eden Emerald Buyers Agent analyzed FBI crime data from 2023 to rank all 50 states based on the prevalence of crimes against persons, property, and society. Texas ranks as the 16th most dangerous state in the U.S., with a total crime rate of 5,609 per 100,000 people—11% higher than the national average of 5,074.

The state also recorded the seventeenth-highest total crime rate for offenses against persons and the sixteenth-highest total crime rate for offenses against property, with 1,546 and 3,313 per 100,000 people, respectively. There were 466,350 crimes against persons recorded, including 436,908 cases of assault, and 999,345 crimes against property, with 472,786 of these classified as larceny theft.

On a more reassuring note, Texas performed slightly better when it came to crimes against society, ranking 26th in the nation. Drug or narcotics offenses in the state were 4% lower than the national average, with 596 crimes per 100,000 people, suggesting some areas of crime may be trending down.
