Family desperate for answers after Southern California grandfather disappears

Family members are desperate for answers after a Southern California grandfather disappeared and his bank accounts were emptied.

Naiping Hou, 74, of Rancho Cucamonga, was reported missing on May 4, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

His son, Wen Hou, said the last time he saw his father was during a fishing trip they took in San Pedro in March.

“He was in a very good mood,” Wen told KTLA’s Sandra Mitchell. “He caught a lot of fish. His friends were there, too. He was very happy.”

A few weeks later, Wen became concerned when his father’s text messages seemed out of character. He now believes someone else was using his cellphone.

“[Always saying] he’s tired or he’ll call me later — just reasons that were strange,” Wen said. “He has very short responses and he doesn’t share photos anymore over the course of those couple of weeks.”

When friends visited Naiping’s Rancho Cucamonga home in May, they found the residence had been emptied. The interior was renovated and repainted and there was no sign of the 74-year-old.

Authorities decided to check Naiping’s bank accounts and on July 9, they confirmed that “extensive fraudulent transactions” were conducted around the time of his disappearance.

“His money was also gone,” Wen said. “We were able to track the financial transactions. More than $1 million [was withdrawn from] his account to purchase physical gold online.”

Family members believe Naiping was kidnapped. The suspect or suspects involved had also reportedly tried to sell his vehicles and rent out his home.

As they desperately search for leads on the case, they’re offering a $250,000 reward for information leading to Naiping’s whereabouts or the identification of those involved in his disappearance.

Wen described his father as a loving husband and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family and staying active in his local community.

“My dad is like the guide to my life,” Wen said. “I really miss him. I hope we can find him.”

Naiping is described as an Asian man who stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He has dark hair and dark eyes, and has a birthmark on his upper left chest.

Investigators confirmed they are following several leads as the search continues. His family created a website where more information can be found.

Deputies are also seeking information about a silver Toyota Yaris in connection with the man’s disappearance.

Anyone who may know Naiping’s whereabouts or has information is asked to call Detective Vanayes Quezada at 909-890-4848.
