The closure was confirmed to KOIN 6 News by the grocery chain Wednesday afternoon, who said the exact date of the closure is unknown but will likely come in September.
“Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close the Gateway Fred Meyer store,” a spokesperson said. “We will offer each impacted store associate the opportunity to transfer to a new location. This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business.”
The company said it would continue to operate the nearby fuel station at 1505 NE 92nd Avenue.
Details of what led to the store’s upcoming closure are unclear.
KOIN 6 News spoke with shoppers at the Gateway Fred Meyer on Wednesday evening. Many expressed concern for finding a replacement destination for getting their groceries, since the Fred Meyer is located right next to the Gateway Transit Center, a major hub for MAX Trains.
“I’m going to have to go to Walmart, I live by the airport. But I come here because its closer to me getting home to grabbing dinner or whatever,” one shopper said.
The Fred Meyer store is known for establishing the “Gateway” moniker for the surrounding shopping district.
