17-year-old sentenced on manslaughter charge after causing death in ‘family fight’ last year

DUCHESNE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A 17-year-old from Duchesne County was sentenced to a prison term between two and 15 years today, after pleading guilty to killing another teen with a firearm last year.

On Sept. 22, 2024, Officials responded to reports of a ‘family fight’ in Duchesne County and found one juvenile teen dead with a gunshot wound in his upper body.

Haegen Ray Sagers, who was 16 years old at the time, was taken into custody, where he was later charged as an adult on one count of murder and one count of felony discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury.

On May 27, 2025, Sagers accepted a plea deal that amended the murder charge to second degree felony manslaughter and dismissed the second charge. Today, the court heard victim impact statements and imposed sentencing.

Sagers was sentenced to an indeterminate sentence between two and 15 years, with credit for time served. A second-degree felony can carry a prison term between one to 15 years in prison, according to Utah State Code §76-3-203.

He will be housed in juvenile facilities until he is released or reaches the age of 25.
