Passenger train, semitruck crash in South Bay

(KRON) — A passenger train and semitruck crashed near the intersection of Masten and Fitzgerald avenues in Rucker, just north of Gilroy Monday at about 7:03 a.m.

Photos of the scene show the truck’s engine torn open from the force of the passing train. Despite the damage, no major injuries were suffered in the crash, Santa Clara County Fire Department said.

“Eighteen passengers and two crew members on the train were transferred to a bus while cleanup continued on site,” the fire department said.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department provided the following railway safety tips:

  • Trains have the right of way 100% of the time
  • Never pass flashing lights, go around lowered gates or rush across tracks; always wait until gates are raised and lights have stopped
  • It’s illegal and unsafe to walk on or beside tracks; only cross at designated public crossings
  • Always expect a train: They can run on any track, at any time, from either direction, and can appear much faster than you think
