Kristian Barboza pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and felony death by vehicle. Officials said a judge ordered him to serve 51-74 months in prison; however, that sentence was suspended pending his successful completion of 36 months of supervised probation. As a condition of the probation, Barboza will serve a split sentence of 180 days in jail.
Just before 9 p.m. on March 25, 2020, Barboza, then 19 years old, sped past two Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s deputies in a 2009 Toyota RAV4. He then allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of North Tryon Street and University City Boulevard, crashing into a 2012 Mercedes C300 driven by Rosselyn Mechele Torrence.
Barboza was reportedly going more than 30 mph over the speed limit when he T-boned into Torrence, forcing her car into the wall of the overpass. Officials said it took firefighters about 30 minutes to remove Torrence from her car due to the heavy damage and where it was located.
Barboza allegedly tried to leave the scene and was described as having fought deputies who were attempting to detain him. Once in custody, he was taken to a hospital where he admitted to consuming marijuana and acid earlier that night.
Torrence suffered multiple severe injuries and, after months in the hospital, succumbed to her injuries on July 30, 2020.
According to CMPD, drug impairment, reckless driving and excessive speed were all contributing factors in the crash for Barboza.
