According to court documents filed on July 14, Marquavius McLeod requested that the Hinds County Court schedule a preliminary hearing date within the next two weeks.
Marquavius McLeod was charged with one count of murder and six counts of aggravated assault in connection to the shooting. He is being held in the Hinds County Detention Center.
“The Accused believes that a preliminary hearing would show that the charges upon which he is being detained are baseless,” the documents stated.
The shooting occurred hours of the Hal’s St. Paddy’s Parade and Festival on March 22 after police said two groups got into a fight. The deceased victim was identified as Cortez George, 21, of Jackson, by the interim Hinds County coroner. George was shot multiple times.
Bailey Martin, press secretary for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), previously announced that Michael McLeod, who was a law enforcement officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), and Marquavius McLeod were both arrested in connection to the shooting.
UMMC officials said McLeod, who served as a police officer with UMMC Police and Public Safety Department for about a year, was fired on March 27.
Capitol police announced Kayne Davis, 18, was arrested on July 10 in connection to the shooting. They said Davis fled the state after the shooting on March 22. The U.S. Marshal’s Service assisted with the arrest.
Davis was charged with one count of murder and seven counts of aggravated assault.
